Fire Compliance Officer

We are looking for a fire compliance officer to support the formation of a compliance team

Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 DoE

Reporting to the Technical Director (Fire Compliance), the Fire Compliance Officer will support the delivery of fire compliance services across a range of projects, acting as technical authority and client contact. You will be responsible for reviewing fire safety strategies and technical design reports to extract the relevant information required to ensure design and construction compliance, and liaise with stakeholders to support safe, compliant, and cost-effective fire safety solutions across multiple sectors.

This will involve reviewing detailed site compliance audits, reporting and coordination with fire engineers, surveyors/auditors, building owners, and contractors to develop and implement remediation plans where necessary.

The role requires a holistic understanding of construction methods and details, the principles of their selection for application, and correct installation in accordance with building design details and strategy.

Main Duties

  • Provision of peer review and quality assurance services
  • Lead and manage fire compliance aspects of projects from feasibility through to completion and handover, monitoring progress and managing deadlines efficiently
  • Undertake compliance audits and deliver audit reports in accordance with UK Building Regulations & guidance documents, design and specification documents and manufacturer's installation guidance
  • Review fire safety strategies and technical design reports to extract architectural and MEP design information to assess and advise on fire code compliance during construction
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, design teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies on fire compliance matters
  • Support planning, construction, and regulatory approval processes through expert fire safety advice and documentation
  • Undertake on-site inspections and audits on occasion to monitor fire safety implementation and performance
  • Identify fire risks associated with cladding and firestopping systems and advise on appropriate remediation strategies
  • Work closely with fire engineers, architects, and building owners to recommend cost-effective, compliant solutions for fire safety improvements
  • Manage and oversee cladding and compartmentation/firestopping remediation projects, ensuring work is carried out to the required safety and regulatory standards
  • Support tendering processes by providing technical input and reviewing contractor proposals for cladding and fire safety works.

Key Skills & Requirements

  • Demonstrable competency via either a degree in civil engineering, building surveying, fire engineering, façade engineering or a related discipline, or 5 years of recognised prior experience in these fields
  • Chartered status (RICS, IFE, CIOB, CABE or equivalent) or working towards membership is highly desirable
  • Proven experience in façade / external wall inspections, fire consultancy, or building surveying, with a focus on fire safety, external wall systems, and compartmentation/firestopping
  • Good understanding of UK Building Regulations / compliance frameworks (Building Safety Act, Approved Document B) and BS 9991, BS 9999 and BS 7974 methodologies
  • Familiarity with fire testing standards (BS 8414 and BS EN 13501)
  • Strong technical report-writing skills and ability to clearly communicate complex fire safety issues
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Capability to manage and develop a team of compliance officers which will support the team lead is desirable
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, decision-making and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues confidently to a range of audiences.
  • Able to challenge contractors and have difficult conversations around evidenced on-site non-compliances to reach successful remediation of defective work.
  • Be able to organise your working week effectively and efficiently to meet reasonable defined deadlines
  • Strong basic IT skills i.e. MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites as required. Periodic overnight stays may be required for business-related travel.
